Kailua Spot Guide

Kailua Kite surf spot map

The main kite spot on the island , Kailua is the place to take lessons, learn, progress and develop your wave skills for the more advanced locations on Oahu. This coupled with user friendly conditions, nice grassy setup area and a friendly active kite community makes this the busiest kite spot on Oahu. Finding a park can be challenging at peak times.

Kite Surfing Kailua

The large sandy beach fringed bay, with a downwind aspect makes this the “go to” spot for learning to kite, with pretty much all kite lesson activity centered here. Unfortunately, the Kailua residents are not fans of kiting and have tried to ban it several times. This prevents any legal operation of kite schools at the beach, but several people and businesses still teach on the “low down”

Because of the higher scrutiny here the are definite entry and exit routes and rules to kite which are given below.

Water Entry/Exit Access

Please see the below zones for entry and exit from the water at Kailua beach park.

Equipment Setup

Please leave the area marked in yellow clear and free of kites. Set your kite and lines up in the grassy area, and only take it down to the beach when you are ready to launch

Do not leave unused kites or gear on the beach!

The wind in Kailua is on the lighter side, so pack your big kites, and bring your foils if you want to get out consistently. Summer, May-Sept is the windy time with sunny days and 12-16knts of breeze. I like the winguru wind report for Kailua, it seems pretty accurate  When its windy there is often a reasonable amount wind swell so the outer reefs can have fun little waves to play in. The forecast below hows two periods of great wind, and then thursday through Saturday has plenty of north swell which will light up the outer reefs!

Kailua Great Wind Report

The freestyle area is in the lee of flat island, or for boosting head out to jump city where the breaking waves provide nice ramps.

Learning Kitesurfing Kailua

For waves, there is a small beginner wave east of flat island, and then at jump city the waves are playful and pretty un-consequential. This all changes when you head out to the “Moku’s Breaks” near the Mokulua Islands. These pick up far more swell, the waves are considerably steeper and offer some adventurous wave kiting, it’s a long swim in from here too. In winter when you have powerful NW wrapping in here it can get very real.
