Mokuleia Kiting Guide

Considered the best  wave and windiest kite surfing wave riding spot on Oahu, Mokuleia is primarily a running, bowling right  with nice walls and handles up to 6-8ft Hawaiian or  triple overhead, but has a bit of something for everyone- except learners (do yourself a favor and learn in Kailua)The map above outlines  the main area of the setup.

Kite Surfing Mokuleia

With its nice grassy launch area and reasonable parking, its an easy access spot at the western end of the North Shore of Oahu. Wave season runs Sept- May, with best months for kiting being Oct-Nov and Mar-May. November to March the waves get very large and the normal trade winds go more inconsistent. The wind at this location is a trade wind with a thermal assist, meaning that you need normal trades to be blowing, and if it is a sunny day the wind will peak from 2-5pm.  If its cloudy and not strong trades it can be hit or miss, and often a passing shower can kill of the wind.

The majority of days are around 14-16knots so perfect for a 9/10m kite. When there are strong trades, its 16-22kn, so perfect for a 7/8m kite. Wind starts at approx. 11am, and will run through to sunset on sunny days. Any swell direction works, but it starts to get out of control above 6-8ft Hawaiian. Summertime brings no waves and 1ft of wind swell chop, but with the best wind on the island can be fun for practice and free style riding. Below is what a good windguru forecast for the spot. There is not much around this location so pack any food, or brews that you might want to have after your session. There are some great winging spots towards Kaena point, but Mokuleia is a bit reefy and hard on you equipment to be a good winging spot. Accomodation is also sparse in the area, and you will need a car to get here from either your airbnb on north shore, or hotel accomodation.
